Yammer is a microblogging service that has become popular with NSW DET staff in recent months as a great way of communicating with colleagues. Yammer is like Twitter, except, only people with the same employee email are networked together. In other words, you have to have a verified @det.nsw.edu.au address to join the NSW DET Yammer.
It is clear that a range of people in our organisation are sharing expertises, resources, contacts and generally being supportive of each other. You can upload files, provide professional details and generally participate in the conversation. There are quite a few DPs already joined and it is highly recommended.
You are able to have mobile phone apps and a desktop client to access Yammer. Both have improved my user experience.
Check out Yammer when you have a chance.
UPDATE
There is a DP community HERE and Ben Jones has written a A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO YAMMER (updated) that will help ‘newbies’.

Hi Darcy
Thanks for setting this up. I am reading thru the tips and look forward to getting to know people and what is happening better.
As DP’s we can often feel isolated , even in a big school. For time poor people this is definitely the way to go.

Brilliant!
I just uploaded a tips sheet in yammer, & I advise new members to look at my suggestion for email notifications. Otherwise your email box will be filled with alerts. You can set so you just get an alert when someone replies to you/talks about you and a once a day diggest of all the discussion from the people you follow.
happy yammering
Ben 🙂

Darcy, may I take the opportunity to ask any DP’s reading this blog to invite their Teacher Librarians to join the Teacher Librarian Community I set up on Yammer. I have found Yammer helpful even though I am active on twitter because it is so directly related to our situation.

Hi Darcy,
Fabulous, my staff and students are frothing over “edmodo”. It will be interesting to see how they go with this, naturally I will jump on board. Interesting how micro-blogging, based on modifications of twitter is really taking off. The students at my school are really collaborating with their teachers beautifully. I am assuming that Yammer is a staff tool. Ie as Students could use their email addresses to start their own yammer. Is that how it works? Also thanks to Ben for the tip on “setting” yammer up to not get flooded with emails..

The solidarity generated by Yammering with DET colleagues is so positive. In weeks I have grown closer to us than dozens of conferences and email listservs did over many years. Reading Yammer takes me to meeting places when I have to stay where I am.
